Ankle Support

If you are an athlete who enjoys sports which involve running and changing directions quickly such as basketball or soccer, then getting an ankle support is almost a must. Ankle sprains are among the most common sports injuries. Unlike certain muscles that you will need to stretch out in order to prevent muscle pulls and other injuries, you can’t really do much with your ankles. Because of this, you will need to provide them with extra support. Just one twist or one miss step can cause your ankle to bend too far and cause you to be in pain.

Ankle supports can come in a couple of different ways. The cheapest form of these supports is the wraps. An elastic ankle support can be used to wrap around your ankles in order to provide better support. Many people use these in lighter intensity sports where they may only need a bit of support. It will require you to wrap your foot correctly and will take some time but since it’s inexpensive to buy, if you don’t want to spend much money, then these wraps are a good choice.

Another type of support is the ankle support brace. These are for more heavy duty support. These supports come in different styles but one common thing they share is the shell that helps keep your ankles in place and prevents them from bending too far. Some can be easily put onto your feet with Velcro while others such as a lace up ankle support will use laces where you need to tie them like you would with your shoes. Most of these types of ankle support can be adjusted to fit your foot in terms of tightness. You will want to make sure you get one that fits you as well as one that gives you the right amount of support for your ankles but at the same time give you flexibility to move around without causing any pain.

There are also ankle support shoes that you can buy as well. Many of these types of shoes are also known as high risers. Basically the part of the shoe that you put your feet in is higher and wraps around your ankles. Although they give better support than regular shoes, in order to get the right support, you will need to tie them pretty tight. Most basketball shoes have some height in this department to help support your ankles since there is so much change of direction that is required in basketball that ankle sprains are quite common.

If you do sprain your ankle, make sure you ice it up and keep it elevated and stay off of your foot until you are 100% healed. Trying to walk or run again before it’s completely healed can cause your ankles to become prone to being sprained easily. The ankle support you choose will depend on your needs. The more you need to change directions in the middle of running, the more support you will probably need. On top of that, if you had a sprain in the past, it’s likely that you will have another one if you don’t have the right support. You can find ankle support braces online for various prices. Remember to not only look for quality of support but also comfort as well. You want to protect your ankles but not to the point where you are prohibiting movement.
