How to Stop Binge Eating
In order to stop binge eating, you will first need to understand what causes it to begin with. Once you are aware of the patterns that you go through to get you to the point where you are eating uncontrollably, you will have a greater chance of breaking that habit. There are actually different reasons why anyone would eat all the time. One reason deals with the emotional side where a person sees food as a way to escape their problems. Whenever they feel stressed, they turn to food. Another reason could be something wrong with the part of the brain that tells you to stop eating.
If you have a severe case of binge eating, then you may want to get some professional help. For most people however, randomly stuffing themselves with food is something that can be prevented. Knowing how to stop binge eating comes down to understanding that you don’t always want to eat. There are times when you don’t feel like eating. It’s when something triggers you to get into a certain pattern that leads to food being put in your mouth that is the problem. So in order to overcome binge eating, you will need to recognize these triggers that cause you to overeat.
This is similar to smokers. People who smoke a lot don’t have the craving 24/7. It’s when something triggers that urge that they end up lighting up. With food, the trigger can be many different things. Simply seeing a piece of cake in the fridge or even on TV can produce the urge to want to eat. Different states or moods can trigger this feel as well. Many people eat when they feel stressed or depressed. The thing to realize is that not everyone eats when they feel these feelings. In fact, if you eat when you feel a certain way, it’s because you trained yourself to do so. Eating causes biological changes in the body that can help you feel better and since that is the case, your brain has linked up eating to pleasurable feelings. This is one of the main reasons why people eat when they are feeling sad or stressed.
So what can you do to actually stop binge eating? There are lots of ways to stop binge eating so you will need to try them out to see what works best. One thing you can do is to start eating on a schedule. This means that every 3 to 4 hours, you grab something to eat. By doing this, you will train your body to be hungry at certain hours of the day. This may be a bit hard at first but like anything, if you do it long enough, it will become easy. You will ideally want to eat at the same time each day.
Another thing you will want to do if you aren’t already is to exercise. We all know the benefits of exercising but in this case, it’s a good way to change the way you feel. Just like how food can change your mood, so can exercise. Train your body to do something positive when you are in a stressed state. Of course, exercising will also help you to lose weight as well.
Since seeing certain types of foods can trigger you to want to eat, another way to stop binge eating is to get rid of the foods that will cause you to overeat. These tips will take some time and patience in order to work. Like breaking any habit, you will need to find a different response whenever a trigger goes off and you feel like eating. Instead of giving into your cravings, try doing something out of the ordinary such as tossing that piece of cake in the toilet. This may sound silly but the point is to interrupt the pattern. Binge eating is just that, a pattern that you run through. A trigger will start it and your habit will let it run its course unless you interrupt it by doing something different.
Again, if you fall into the small percentage of people who have this disorder at a level that seems incurable, you may want to get some professional help. Being able to stop binge eating can really help you achieve the body that you want as well as get rid of the guilt you keep feeling every time you over eat. It’s a cycle/pattern that can really make you feel miserable emotionally as well as physically so do what you can to change this habit.
