A teeth whitening tray is basically a thin plastic tray that fit over your teeth. Now when you get these trays, you will also have whitening gel as well. They come in two ways. One is in a kit with empty trays and a syringe. This gel will be placed into these trays using a syringe. After that you will be fitting these trays over your teeth and leaving them there for about 30-45 minutes. The gel contains hydrogen peroxide in them which has a bleaching agent. The other way that these trays are sold is in foil packages where the gel is already inside the trays. All you do is open the foil package, remove the tray, stick them over your teeth and then gently bite down on them to spread the gel around to all the areas of your teeth. You will need to use your fingers to press against the tray so that the gel is dispersed to all areas of your teeth.
The kits with the syringes can vary in cost from $30 to $60 depending on the supply. The difference is in what the kit includes. Some will come with whitening toothpaste and a tooth brush to further help you get whiter teeth. In terms of brands, they all pretty much work the same but the Aquafresh teeth whitening trays seem to be popular. The ones that come in foil packages can be bought for under $30.
One of the downside to these trays is that it can hurt to wear them since we all of different shaped teeth. For this reason, some people will pay to get custom teeth whitening trays. This can be done at your dentist where they will basically get a molding of your teeth. A couple of days later, you would come back and get trays that will fit your teeth perfectly. These do cost a lost more though and will run you about $200 or more.
Wouldn’t it be great if you can get some custom trays for your teeth for really cheap? Well, you can. Here’s how. You can make them yourself at home. Here’s what you do. Go to a store that sells mouth guards such as Walmart. You will want 2 of them. It should cost you about $1 each. There will normally be a child size and an adult size so make sure you get the right one. What you will do is boil up some water and simply place the mouth guard into the water for about 2 minutes. What will happen is that the plastic will start to become flexible. After that, carefully place the tray over your top row of teeth and start to press against the mouth guard in order to shape it to the exact shape of your teeth. Make sure it’s not too hot. You don’t want to get burned. Then do the same with the bottom row with the other mouth guard. Once you get the right shape, put the mouth guards into the freezer for a couple of minute and take it out.
The shape of your teeth should have stayed. You will now have your very own custom teeth whitening trays all for about $2. From here, simply buy some whitening gel and use it as you would use any other tray.

Actually, the trays that you boil are known as boil and bite trays and are not the same as custom made trays. Custom made trays are made from an alginate impression of your teeth that a dentist or dental hygienist makes. Custom trays made from the dental office are the most accurate version of your teeth and gum tissues.
They aren’t exactly the same but the results you get are similar for a fraction of the cost. I’ve had both versions, the custom ones from my dentist and the ones I made myself. The homemade ones aren’t as accurate of course but the results is what matters. The custom made ones were definitely not 100 times better even though I paid 100 times more for those.
